With the use of technology becoming more prevalent in students lives, it has never been more important that students are aware of the responsibilities and skills that makes a good digital citizen. One of the five elements in the ICT General Capabilities in the Australian Curriculum ACARA is Applying social and ethical protocols when using ICT. This element involves students developing an understanding of:
  • recognise intellectual property
  • apply digital information security practices
  • apply personal security protocols
  • identify the impacts of ICT in society.
It is therefore imperative that schools and teachers support and guide students as they participate in the online world.

This wiki has been created by a team of teacher librarians to support classroom teachers as they embed digital citizenship into the curriculum. It focuses on cybersafety through five key elements; digital footprints, sharing information, cyberbullying, digital awareness and global perspective.

Approved Proposal:
A positive and confident digital citizen collaborates, creates, thinks critically and communicates with others. Digital citizenship, therefore, encompasses the skills and knowledge needed to effectively participate in the digital world. As Information Leaders, Teacher Librarians (TLs) have a significant role in educating teachers, parents and students on how to be safe, responsible, active and informed users of technology. This module will look at how TLs in primary education can provide information, support and resources to teachers as they embed digital citizenship into the curriculum. It will focus on the safety and responsibility aspect of digital citizenship through four key elements; digital footprints, sharing information, cyberbullying and digital awareness.
